Festival Tips from Balco,

Ok my tips to try and help anyone going to another festival, these tips are based on information gained from my experience of a great festival summer and from other people mistakes and advice (Names will be mentioned)

1. You will need a Tent to sleep in and make sure you have everything before you take it, maybe put the tent up in your garden before you set off, well you wouldn't want to get there and find out you don't have the poles for it would you now!!!  Another good idea with the tent is to have an entrance area as well as the main area. It is good for when it is bad weather, you can leave the wet stuff in there and keep your inner tent dry which is a lot better to sleep in than a wet area.

2. When it comes to your clothes and of cause your underwear and socks. Well for all the festivals I took two pairs of combat shorts and one pair of Combat trousers, the pockets are great on these and whatever you do don't take jeans because if they get wet you will have no chance of getting them dry. Underwear well you can decide that one, but with socks I would recommend a clean pair every day. You are on your feet all day long  and well you know what I mean don't you!!! Two pairs of shoes is a good idea as well one for dry and one to keep for wet and mud

3. Rain or shine, well you should go to any festival prepared for whatever weather is thrown at you. If you go well prepared then you will be fine. Make sure you take a waterproof with you for the rain and a baseball cap is great for both rain or shine. The other essential item to bring with you is Sun screen, You may think its a stupid idea but if the weather is like what it was this year, it will probably be the longest you are in the sun that year. You will be in sun from the moment you get up till when the sun sets and this is everyday of the festival.

4. getting your stuff to the campsite, as the campsite is normally a long walk form the entrance,  I would recommend you invest in a rucksack. It is so much easier walking for half an hour or longer with everything on your back ok you may have another smaller bag but most stuff will be in your rucksack. I had my stuff all in a large holdal last year and this year some people had their stuff in black bags. I am glad I brought a rucksack and other people are saying when they go to other festivals they will get a rucksack.

  5. Food that is worth bringing along, Well there are two differences here For most of the festivals my personal view is you don't need to bring a camping stove and only bring food with you for your breakfasts and also some crisps and sweets for the nights sat outside the tents. The foods I brought to every festival were A bunch of Bananas they are great energy releases, prepacked mixed fruits, cereal bars, and I also took some kind of juice for each breakfast. I took Lucozade mainly.

The other opinion is that when you go to Glastonbury because the whole site is open to you. What I mean is that the whole site is the arena, so you don't have to leave to go back to the camping sites. This means if you bring a stove with you and some meals. E.g  Pasta breaks pot noodles and soups etc, where you just add boiling water, you could save yourself a lot of money over the festival, remember at Glastonbury you arrive on the Wednesday and don't leave till the Monday. But remember a Stove does add weight to your backpack you have been warned, if  there is a group camping together you really only need one stove so check with them.

6. Right this is a great tip for when you are trying to get to sleep at a festival campsite. If you have been in one you know how loud they can get and if you haven't well you have been warned. This idea was passed to me at T in the park by someone who lives about 64 miles away from me, anyone know who that is? (well I did say no names) Anyway take a walkman with you when you go to a festival and when you retire to the comforts of your tent, pop your earphones in and play some of your music. You can still hear the noise outside but it is muffled so is greatly reduced and this helps you enter the land of nod. Don't worry about your walkman batteries it will stop once it gets to the end of the tape or minidisc. Even if you do wake up when it stops, it doesn't matter, by then most people have gone to bed and it is not as loud. Pleasant dreams!!!

7. So you don't think you can go a whole festival without washing, well they do have showers you can use but I don't see the point in queuing for them when you could be enjoying yourself by doing something at the festival or watching a band. Do what I did and have a wash every day with baby wipes. They are fantastic things and you will be surprised at how clean they actually keep you.  (well I suppose you will have to ask everyone else about that, for all I know I could have been the smelliest person on the site) "Oh I never thought about that"

I will try and think of some more tips, I'm sure I have more. Until then why not pop along to the messageboard and leave your festival tips. Go on I know you want to.
